What Is A Porcelain Crown?

A porcelain crown is a dental cap that is placed over your tooth to restore weak, broken or decayed teeth. We may also recommend a crown to cover dental implants and root canal-treated teeth. They can be made from many different materials, but at Marc A. Minch, DMD, we use the highest quality of porcelain to help ensure your crown lasts for many years!

Why Would I Need A Porcelain Crown?

At Marc A. Minch, DMD, we value our patients and put their needs and concerns first before all else. When you come in for your crown consultation, our team will conduct a thorough evaluation to see if this treatment makes sense for your unique situation. Here are a few reasons someone might need a porcelain crown:

  • Restore A Damaged Tooth: Porcelain crowns can repair teeth that are cracked, chipped, or weakened from decay to restore their strength and function.

  • Improve Appearance: They are used to cover discolored or misshapen teeth, enhancing the overall aesthetics of your smile.

  • Protect A Tooth: After a root canal treatment, a crown can protect the tooth from further damage.

  • Support A Dental Bridge: Crowns can anchor a dental bridge in place, filling in gaps caused by missing teeth.

  • Replace A Large Filling: When a tooth has a large filling and there isn’t much natural tooth left, a crown can protect and support the remaining structure.

  • Cover A Dental Implant: Crowns are often used to cover and complete a dental implant, providing a natural look and function.

The Process of Placing Porcelain Crowns

At Marc A. Minch, DMD, we aim to make your visits with us convenient and comfortable. The process of placing your crown is simple and done in two quick office visits. At each visit, you can expect:

Your First Visit

  • Tooth Preparation: Before we place your porcelain crown, we will need to prepare the tooth by removing part of the natural enamel. The idea is to make room for the new crown and make sure it bonds correctly.

  • Digital Impressions: Our team will need to take impressions of your teeth to make sure the crowns are tailored to your exact tooth shape and size. The good news is that we can do this with our innovative iTero digital 3D scanner, so you don’t have to worry about messy, goopy impressions!

  • Temporary Crown Placement: We will place a temporary crown on your tooth until the permanent one arrives.

Your Second Visit

  • Removal Of The Temporary Crown: When you come in for your second and final visit, one of our dentists will remove your temporary crown.

  • Fit Check: Before permanently attaching the new crown, they will make sure it fits correctly over your tooth.

  • Crown Bonding: Finally, Dr. Minch or Dr. Newton will bond your crown to the specific tooth using a durable dental cement.

Frequently Asked Questions

When considering a dental crown, having a clear understanding of the process can help you feel more confident about your options. Dr. Minch and Dr. Newton take the time to evaluate your individual concerns and discuss recommendations based on the health, function and appearance of your smile. Explore the FAQs below to learn more about what to expect and how to care for your restoration:

How long do dental crowns last?

Dental crowns are made to provide lasting support for teeth that have been damaged or weakened. While their lifespan can vary depending on factors such as the condition of the tooth and how well the crown is cared for, a high-quality restoration can serve your smile for many years. Dr. Minch or Dr. Newton can provide guidance on keeping your crown in good condition over time.

Your comfort is an important consideration when receiving a dental crown. Our dentists and team take a thoughtful approach to help make your visits as comfortable as possible and can discuss the process with you beforehand. If you have concerns about discomfort, your questions can be addressed before treatment begins so you know what to expect.

Yes. A crown can be tailored to your individual tooth shape and size, helping it complement the rest of your smile. Because the restoration is tooth-colored, it can also provide an aesthetic solution for teeth that are damaged, discolored or misshapen.

Will a dental crown feel like a real tooth?

When designed to fit your smile, a crown can help restore a damaged tooth and support comfortable everyday function. Because each restoration is custom-made, Dr. Minch or Dr. Newton can consider how it fits with your surrounding teeth and bite. Your mouth may need a short period of adjustment, but the goal is for your restoration to feel comfortable and function seamlessly as part of your smile.

Yes. After the tooth is prepared and impressions are taken during your first visit, a temporary crown is placed to cover the tooth while the permanent restoration is being made. At your second appointment, the temporary one is removed before the final crown is checked and bonded into place.

Teeth that have undergone root canal treatment may benefit from the added strength and coverage a crown can provide. Whether one is appropriate depends on your individual situation and the condition of the tooth. Dr. Minch or Dr. Newton will perform a thorough evaluation and discuss whether this type of restoration may be right for your smile.
