Botox®

Treatment Beyond General Dentistry

To say that Botox® is a widely popular treatment is an understatement, with The American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery reporting nearly 9.5 million Botox® treatments performed in 2023 alone. This commonly performed therapy isn’t just effective at treating fine lines and wrinkles on facial features, but it is also an extremely effective tool in dentistry as well. At Marc A. Minch, DMD, our treatment options go beyond just improving the function and aesthetics of your smile, and we are happy to offer this injection therapy to our patients in Boynton Beach, Florida!

What is Botox®?

Botulinum toxin, or Botox®, is a neurotoxin that helps the muscles relax by blocking the nerve signals–preventing them from contracting. Wrinkles appear when the muscles in your face are moving, but when told not to contract by the botulinum toxin injection, they cease movement and as a result smooth the wrinkles. Many people notice the difference between three to ten days after treatment and it can last anywhere between three to six months. Because Botox® treatments temporarily change the mechanism of muscle function, patients typically get treatments a couple of times per year to maintain their results.

How Botox® Is Used In Dentistry

Studies show it is a safe, effective treatment not only for aesthetic purposes but also in dentistry as well. At Marc A. Minch, DMD, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to offer this modern solution in dentistry to our patients in Southeast Florida. Here are some of the reasons you may consider Botox® therapy with us:

Temporomandibular joint, or TMJ, disorders make up many conditions that cause pain in the jaw joint and muscles–impacting your jaw mobility. Depending on the case, it can be very painful, causing difficulty chewing and even speaking. This can come about for many reasons including stress, jaw trauma or teeth clenching. Botox® injections may help treat your TMJ disorder by allowing those muscles to relax, reducing any pain and discomfort you are feeling.

Bruxism, also known as teeth grinding, is a form of clenching down on your teeth. Although it can happen while you are awake it most commonly occurs at night. Many factors contribute to bruxism including stress, anxiety or sleep troubles and it can cause a wide variety of dental issues like jaw pain and headaches. Botox® may help manage your teeth grinding symptoms by preventing the muscles in your jaw from contracting, reducing the tension in your face.

A gummy smile is when your upper lip is raised, showing more of your gums. There’s nothing wrong with a gummy smile, but some people seek treatment for aesthetic reasons to correct it. Injections can be used to lower the upper lip thus hiding some of the gums, achieving a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

Dentures may be a challenge for patients who have experienced missing teeth for a while due to the strong, irregular muscle contractions. When Botox® is injected into the muscles around the face it helps relax the muscles, allowing you to adjust more easily to your new dentures.
