While the impressions of old used large trays and messy impression material to create a mold of the teeth, modern advancements in technology have offered a new approach. We use a tool, known as the iTero Digital Scanner, to make a digital impression of your teeth and gums. These digital images are compiled using hundreds of thousands of data points that are captured with a handheld wand that gently scans each surface of each tooth. The images are immediately transferred to the computer so you can see your digital impression being made in real time. The iTero Digital Scanner is an essential part of making precision, custom aligners for the Invisalign® process.

Initial Consultation

Dr. Minch or Dr. Newton will examine your teeth and gums and discuss your goals and expectations to help determine if this treatment is right for you.

Our team will then use an advanced 3D digital scanning technology, known as the iTero Digital Scanner, to create a detailed and accurate model of your teeth. The scanner captures high-resolution images, which are used to map out the precise movements required to align your teeth over time.

Based on the digital treatment plan, a series of custom-made aligners are made. Each set of aligners is slightly different from the previous one, designed to move the teeth closer to the desired positions.

Patients wear each set of aligners for about 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing. Every one to two weeks, the patient switches to the next set of trays in the series, which continues to move the teeth closer to their final position.

Once the treatment is complete, patients receive a set of retainers to maintain the new alignment of their teeth and prevent them from shifting back to their original position.

After enjoying your favorite drink, rinse your mouth and clean your teeth before putting your aligners back in.

Don’t panic! If you lose or damage an aligner, contact our office before switching to another tray. Depending on where you are in treatment, we may recommend wearing a previous set temporarily or taking another approach. Missing an occasional period of wear doesn’t necessarily mean starting over, but repeated interruptions can delay progress. We’ll help you figure out the best next step.
