Prioritizing Your Sleep Health

As a dedicated and compassionate dental professional, Dr. Minch takes a special interest in how sleep health directly impacts a person’s overall health and well-being. Our body is able to heal and rejuvenate itself during good quality, adequate and uninterrupted sleep. During sleep, the brain also processes information. This mental restoration boosts focus, problem-solving skills and emotional resilience, helping individuals manage stress more effectively.

In addition, sleep influences appetite-regulating hormones, which can help in weight management and reduce cravings for unhealthy foods. On the contrary, poor sleep can have severe health consequences such as increased risk for heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure and impaired ability to perform daily functions.

Life-Changing Sleep Apnea Help

Using Oral Appliances To Treat Sleep Issues

Dr. Minch offers several different types of oral appliances to treat sleep apnea, snoring or TMJ depending on your specific needs. Vivos, Myobrace and mandibular advancement devices (MADs) offer a great, non-invasive alternative to surgery, which can be expensive and require significant downtime to recover. We aim to provide you with a treatment that will deliver precise results in order to achieve your ideal sleep outcome.

Dr. Minch is a certified Vivos provider and is able to treat your sleep apnea with this oral appliance. It is a non-invasive treatment method that is highly effective with most patients seeing results in an average of 12 months. It works by reshaping and expanding your oral cavity. Depending on your case, Dr. Minch may also use Vivos to open up your airway–this allows you to breathe better and therefore sleep better.

Dr. Minch is a certified Myobrace provider and may use this treatment approach for our pediatric patients ages 5 to 15. These removable oral appliances are worn for about 1-2 hours a day and overnight. It aims to teach your tongue to sit in the correct resting position, which allows you to learn how to breathe through your nose properly and swallow correctly.

These devices are a popular choice for treating sleep apnea. Dr. Minch uses MADs to help pull your jaw and/or tongue forward while you rest, allowing for your airway to open up. This reduces the risk of airway collapse, snoring and interruptions in breathing. Our team has these devices customized to fit precisely over your teeth to deliver the best results for sleep apnea. It may take you a few weeks to adjust to the feeling of your new device, but we promise the end results are worth it!

How We Help Diagnose Sleep Apnea

Dentists such as Dr. Minch play a crucial role in diagnosing and managing sleep apnea, particularly in patients who may not tolerate Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) therapy, the traditional and oftentimes cumbersome treatment for sleep apnea. By evaluating a patient’s oral structure and working alongside sleep specialists, we can design an appliance that fits comfortably and meets our patient’s specific needs. Our team will perform sleep screenings to determine if you are a candidate for an oral appliance. Once your evaluation is complete, Dr. Minch will recommend the type of oral appliance that will be most effective for your sleep diagnosis. We will schedule regular follow-up visits to ensure the appliance continues to work effectively, and, if needed, adjustments can be made to optimize comfort and performance.

Teeth Grinding (Bruxism) Relief

Are you grinding your teeth? Teeth grinding, or bruxism, is a condition that causes individuals to grind or clench their teeth, often at night while they are asleep. Over time, this repeated grinding can cause significant damage to the teeth, leading to enamel wear, cracks and even fractures. This erosion weakens the teeth, making them more susceptible to cavities and sensitivity. In severe cases, bruxism can even result in tooth loss or necessitate restorative dental work like crowns or implants. Additionally, the excessive pressure from grinding can lead to gum recession, which increases the risk of periodontal disease. Beyond the teeth, bruxism can cause jaw pain, headaches and strain on the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which may lead to chronic discomfort and reduced function. Therefore, managing teeth grinding is crucial to preventing long-term damage to your dental health.

NightLase® Snoring and Sleep Apnea Treatment

At Marc A. Minch, DMD, we understand how disruptive snoring and sleep apnea can be to both your health and your quality of sleep. That’s why we proudly offer NightLase®, a non-invasive laser treatment designed to reduce snoring and improve sleep. This innovative procedure works by gently tightening the tissues in the throat, helping to open airways and promote better breathing during sleep. There are many benefits of this procedure such as no surgery or downtime required. It is a comfortable and effective way to help you enjoy sleeping again uninterrupted!

Splint Therapy for Teeth Grinding & TMJ

We may recommend a custom-made mouth guard or bite plate to prevent damage from teeth grinding, a condition known as bruxism. A bite guard is a personalized appliance made from durable materials, typically plastic or acrylic, that covers the teeth and cushions the forces caused by grinding. By absorbing and distributing the pressure, it protects the teeth from wear and prevents the associated pain and discomfort. Bite guards can also help alleviate jaw tension and reduce strain on the TMJ to improve overall oral comfort.
