Seamless Solutions For Tooth Repair

At Marc A. Minch, DMD, we are pleased to offer dental onlays as a superior solution for restoring damaged or decayed teeth. Onlays, often referred to as partial crowns, are custom-made to fit the specific contours of your tooth, providing a durable and aesthetically pleasing alternative to traditional fillings. Our practice utilizes the latest materials and technology to ensure that they not only blend seamlessly with your natural teeth, but also strengthen them and enhance their functionality and longevity. Whether you’re dealing with extensive decay or structural damage, our expert team is dedicated to delivering personalized, high-quality care to help you achieve a healthier, more confident smile.

What Are Onlays?

Onlays are considered in-between a crown and filling, but they differ in how much tooth they cover. They are designed to conceal the entire bite surface of the tooth, covering one or more of the tooth’s cusps. They are manufactured in a lab and made from materials, such as porcelain, composite, resin or gold. Dr. Minch or Dr. Newton bonds them to your affected teeth using dental cement and a light to help solidify it to the surface. At our practice, we utilize tooth-colored onlays as they are known to be strong and durable.

Why We May Recommend An Onlay

These dental restorations are often recommended to repair a damaged tooth due to damage or decay. It is a great alternative to a crown, as it can help restore the health and function of your natural tooth. Here are some reasons we may recommend one for you:

  • A cavity is too big and cannot be improved with a filling
  • The cusp of your tooth is damaged
  • To preserve as much as the natural tooth as possible and if a crown is too invasive

What To Expect During The Onlay Procedure

Our office strives to make the process of receiving your dental onlay as convenient and as relaxing as possible. The procedure usually only takes two visits with us. During your first appointment, Dr. Minch or Dr. Newton will numb the area of the affected tooth with a local anesthetic. Then they will prepare your tooth by gently removing the decayed or injured portion of your tooth. Following, our team will take an impression of your tooth so we can create a custom-made onlay to fit your tooth precisely. Before you leave, we will make sure your tooth is protected by placing a temporary onlay.

You will come in for a second appointment after your new restoration is made and delivered from the lab. Our team will first remove the temporary onlay, clean the area and place the new restoration to make sure it fits properly. After we check your bite, we will bond it to your tooth and polish it, ensuring that it matches your natural teeth.
