The littlest smiles deserve the most caring and thorough dental care, and that is exactly what we deliver. At Marc A. Minch, DMD, our team specializes in gentle and holistic infant oral exams. As your baby’s dental home, our goal is to nurture healthy, happy smiles and create strong oral habits from the very beginning. Learn more about infant oral exams and what to expect at your child’s first visit with us and beyond!

Your Baby’s First Dental Visit

When should you first take your child to see the dentist? The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) recommends bringing them in for their first visit either by the age of one or when their first tooth erupts. From there, parents should schedule regular visits every 6 months. Our experienced dentists and warm and welcoming office aim to make your infant’s first experience at the dentist an overwhelmingly positive one.

At this first visit, we will introduce your baby to our team and show you around our inviting and kid-friendly office. We love meeting our new patients and their families and will take the time to make sure your baby is happy and comfortable before proceeding with the oral examination.

When your baby is ready, Dr. Minch or Dr. Newton will carefully conduct an examination of their mouth, during which they check your baby’s oral development, look for signs of tooth decay or other oral concerns. Throughout the examination, we will help your child stay as safe and relaxed as possible.

Prioritizing Parent Education

A central part of our approach to infant oral care is providing parents with the tools and resources to make informed decisions about their child’s care. We want to set your child up for dental success at home. At your first appointment, we will discuss daily oral hygiene practices and tips that will help your baby develop a healthy smile for a lifetime. We will provide infant oral care instructions on pacifier use, feeding, toothbrushing, nutrition and more.

We also encourage parents to ask any questions they have about their infant’s dental health. No question is too small—our team is here to provide accurate, helpful information to guide your child’s oral development and overall health.

Infant Oral Care Tips

Children are especially susceptible to tooth decay, particularly infants. At Marc A. Minch, DMD, we are passionate about helping parents protect little smiles. Here are some tips for preventing dental decay in your baby. Follow these tips and techniques even before your first visit!

  • Gently rinse or wipe your baby’s teeth and gums with a damp cloth after every feed. This is especially important before they fall asleep!
  • Avoid putting your baby to sleep with a bottle. Milk, formula and juice leave behind sugar on the teeth which can turn into acid, leading to tooth decay.
  • When you do give your child a bottle, make sure it has a straw. This way, their teeth come in contact with less liquids.
  • Thoroughly clean your child’s pacifier between uses and never put honey on them. Following the AAPD’s guidelines, we recommend discontinuing pacifier use after 36 months to prevent your child from developing an anterior open bite.

  • If possible, wean your child from bottle feeding around their first birthday. This can help prevent tooth decay as well as jaw problems, which can be caused by excessive sucking.
  • Brush your baby’s teeth as soon as you see the first one. All teeth can develop decay, even if they are just poking out from the gums! Begin with a soft-bristle toothbrush and a little bit of water. When our dentists recommend it, you can then start using a tiny amount of toothpaste.

  • Help your child brush their teeth even through early childhood.
  • Limit the amount of sugary foods your child eats and drinks. A balanced, nutritious diet can lead to less tooth decay, as well as better overall health.
